At the end of the war, the P-40, P-39 and P-38 aircraft that had served the Sixth Air Force so well were very quickly withdrawn, and the initial, dedicated replacements were long-legged Republic P-47N Thunderbolts, such as 44-88993, a P-47N-15-RE, named "Dorie VI" assigned to the 43rd Fighter Squadron (SE), based briefly at "New" France Field.
